Victron Lynx Smart BMS vs smallBMS (and the VE.Bus BMS V2 in between) is a choice every Victron Lithium Battery Smart owner has to make. Victron’s batteries don’t protect themselves. They need an external BMS that switches loads and chargers off. Victron’s BMS overview datasheet compares these three, and here’s what it says.

How Each One Works
- smallBMS. Every load and charger connects directly to the battery and is switched off by the BMS signals. That’s simple and cheap. Victron recommends it for systems without inverter-chargers.
- VE.Bus BMS V2. It can shut down a MultiPlus or Quattro directly over VE.Bus. With a GX device, it controls compatible solar chargers and inverter-chargers through DVCC. Victron recommends it for systems with inverter-chargers and a GX device.
- Lynx Smart BMS. A safety contactor disconnects the whole system and doubles as a main on/off switch. It includes a battery monitor, Bluetooth, VE.Can and fuse monitoring for up to four Lynx Distributors. Victron recommends it for yachts and RVs that need a safety relay.
Common Points
All three work with Victron Lithium Battery Smart 12.8V and 25.6V batteries over the M8 circular cables. Each supports up to 20 batteries, and all have a pre-alarm output. Victron Lithium NG batteries use the Lynx Smart BMS NG instead.
Which Should You Pick?
- Small DC-only van or boat: smallBMS.
- MultiPlus system with a Cerbo GX: VE.Bus BMS V2.
- RV, yacht or anything needing a main contactor, a shunt and app monitoring: Lynx Smart BMS.

Three Example Systems
To make the choice concrete, here’s how each BMS fits a typical build. All three assume Victron Lithium Battery Smart batteries connected with M8 BMS cables.
| Build | Battery | Main loads and chargers | BMS that fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekend camper van | 12.8V 200Ah | LED lights, a 12V fridge, an Orion DC-DC charger, a SmartSolar MPPT | smallBMS |
| Full-time van | 12.8V 300Ah | MultiPlus-II 12/3000, SmartSolar MPPT, Cerbo GX | VE.Bus BMS V2 |
| 40 ft yacht or large RV | 25.6V 600Ah | Two inverter-chargers, alternator charging, Lynx Distributors | Lynx Smart BMS 1000A |
Why the smallBMS suits the van
In a DC-only van, every load and charger can take a remote on/off signal or be switched by a Smart BatteryProtect. The smallBMS sends a “load disconnect” signal when a cell runs low and a “charge disconnect” signal when one runs high or gets too cold to charge. It’s the lightest and simplest option, at 0.1kg.
Why the VE.Bus BMS V2 suits the MultiPlus build
An inverter-charger is both a large load and a large charger, and the VE.Bus BMS V2 controls it directly over VE.Bus. With a Cerbo GX in the system, DVCC passes the same limits to the solar charger, so everything stops charging or discharging together.
Why the Lynx Smart BMS suits the yacht
At 24V, two inverter-chargers can draw several hundred amps. The Lynx Smart BMS puts a 500A or 1000A contactor in line with the whole DC system, adds a full battery monitor and uses ATC mode to protect the alternator. It also bolts straight onto Lynx Distributors and monitors their fuses.
Sizing the Lynx Smart BMS: 500A or 1000A?
Add up the largest DC current your system can draw at once:
| Load | 12V current (estimate) | 24V current (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| 3,000VA inverter at 2,400W | ≈ 215A | ≈ 106A |
| 5,000VA inverter at 4,000W | ≈ 360A | ≈ 180A |
| Two 5,000VA inverters at 4,000W each | ≈ 720A | ≈ 360A |
Estimates: watts ÷ battery voltage ÷ about 93% inverter efficiency.
If your worst case stays well under 500A, the 500A model (1.9kg) is enough. Large 12V systems and multi-inverter builds point to the 1000A model (2.7kg).
Setup Basics
- Connect the batteries’ M8 BMS cables in a chain and plug the end into the BMS.
- Wire the outputs. On a smallBMS, run the load-disconnect and charge-disconnect signals to each device’s remote on/off input. On a VE.Bus BMS V2, connect the VE.Bus cable to the inverter-charger.
- Add a GX device if you want DVCC control and VRM monitoring. It’s required for the VE.Bus BMS V2’s solar charger control and optional for the others.
- For the Lynx Smart BMS, set battery capacity and alarm levels in VictronConnect over Bluetooth, and update its firmware from the app.
- Test the shutdown. Use the pre-alarm and the app readings to confirm the system disconnects as expected before your first trip.
FAQ
Can I use these with third-party lithium batteries?
No. They’re designed for Victron’s Lithium Battery Smart range and its M8 BMS cables.
Do I still need a SmartShunt with the Lynx Smart BMS?
No. It has a full battery monitor built in.
What’s the difference between the VE.Bus BMS and the VE.Bus BMS V2?
Victron lists the original VE.Bus BMS as end-of-life. The V2 replaces it and adds GX and DVCC control and a 1A auxiliary output.
Which BMS works with Victron Lithium NG batteries?
NG batteries use the Lynx Smart BMS NG rather than the three BMS units in this comparison.
How many batteries can one BMS handle?
Each of the three supports up to 20 Victron Lithium Battery Smart batteries.
