This Victron Phoenix inverter review covers Victron’s standalone pure sine wave inverters: the low-frequency Phoenix 1200VA–5kVA line and, for US buyers, the 120V Phoenix VE.Direct 12/1200 and Phoenix 3000VA 120V. They’re inverters only. They don’t charge your battery from shore power the way a MultiPlus does. In exchange, they’re simpler, and the small models have some of the lowest idle draw in the business.

Source: Victron Phoenix Inverter VE.Direct 120V, Phoenix 3000VA 120V and Phoenix 1200VA–5000VA datasheets. The 1200VA–5kVA low-frequency line in Victron’s datasheet is 230V; US buyers should look at the 120V models.
Other datasheet details: IP21 enclosure, -40 to +65°C operating range with fan cooling, a programmable relay, and up to 6 units in parallel. The 3000VA 120V model also supports split-phase operation.
What We Like
- Low idle draw on small models, which matters for 24/7 loads like a fridge.
- Surge headroom: the 3000VA 120V model lists 6,000W peak.
- Search and AES modes cut idle draw further when nothing is running.
- VictronConnect and VE.Direct monitoring (with the right model or interface).
What to Watch
- No battery charger: if you plug into shore power, a MultiPlus may be a better buy.
- 230V models aren’t for standard US outlets.
- Big models are heavy and draw 20W+ at idle.
Who It’s For
Vans and small RVs that charge from solar and DC-DC only, boats that need a dedicated inverter, and anyone who wants a quality pure sine inverter without a transfer switch.

Settings: How to Change Them
These are VE.Bus inverters. Victron’s datasheet says you need the MK3-USB interface plus VEConfigure or VictronConnect on a computer to change output voltage and frequency, over- and under-voltage limits and the relay. They can also connect to a Cerbo GX for monitoring and control. Phone setup over Bluetooth isn’t built in on these models.
Setup and Troubleshooting Tips
- “It’s 230V.” The 1200VA–5kVA family in Victron’s datasheet outputs 230V. US buyers need the 3000VA 120V model or the Phoenix VE.Direct 120V range (up to 1,500W).
- Idle draw higher than expected. The 12/3000 draws 20W at zero load. Enable AES (15W) or search mode (8W) if loads are intermittent.
- Low-battery shutdowns under heavy load. Big loads pull battery voltage down. Check cable size, fuse and battery capacity before raising the shutdown threshold.
- No transfer switch. Victron itself recommends a MultiPlus with the charger disabled if you need automatic switching to shore or generator power.
- Can’t find it in the app. These VE.Bus models are configured through the MK3-USB interface or monitored through a GX device such as the Cerbo GX.
Who These Suit
Boats, off-grid buildings and 230V markets that need strong start-up power for compressors and motors, which Victron credits to its SinusMax design.
Battery Current Worked Examples
Assuming about 90% efficiency at full load:
| Model | Continuous load | Approx. battery current |
|---|---|---|
| VE.Direct 12/800 120V | 800W | about 74A |
| VE.Direct 12/1200 120V | 1,200W | about 111A |
| Phoenix 12/3000 120V | 2,400W | about 222A |
| Phoenix 24/5000 230V | 4,000W | about 185A |
Cable and fuse sizes should follow the manual for your model and cable length. The 12V 3kVA unit needs heavy cable to keep voltage drop low.
Standby Energy and Search Mode
The Phoenix 12/3000 draws 20W at zero load, about 480Wh a day, but only 8W in search mode, about 190Wh. Search mode turns the output off until a load appears. That suits lights and chargers but not devices with a tiny standby draw the inverter can’t detect.
Worked examples are arithmetic estimates from the published ratings above, not test results. Real numbers depend on temperature, cable runs, battery state and load.
FAQ
Is the Phoenix pure sine wave?
Yes, Victron’s Phoenix inverters are pure sine wave.
Phoenix or MultiPlus?
Phoenix if you never plug in; MultiPlus if you want shore charging and automatic transfer.
Will a Phoenix 12/1200 run a microwave?
Small microwaves under about 1,000W input, generally yes. Check the microwave’s input watts.
Can I parallel two Phoenix 3000s?
Yes. Victron allows up to 6 units in parallel.
What’s the relay for?
Victron lists general alarms and generator start among the uses.
Is a Phoenix good for a fridge?
Yes for compressor start-up, but compare zero-load draw with your fridge’s own consumption.
Which Phoenix models connect to an app?
The VE.Direct models connect to a GX device or, with a VE.Direct Bluetooth dongle, to VictronConnect on a phone for settings and monitoring.
Will the 12/800 run a coffee maker?
Check the appliance label. The 12/800 delivers 800W continuously, so a coffee maker rated 900–1,200W is too large for it, while the Phoenix 12/3000 handles that kind of load.
