The Victron Phoenix Inverter VE.Direct is Victron’s small pure sine wave inverter. It’s built for vans, boats and cabins that need a few hundred watts of clean 120V power without a full inverter/charger. This review covers the 120V models from 250W to 800W, using Victron’s datasheet.

Each size comes in 12V, 24V and 48V. The 12V input range is 9.2–17V.
Features
- Pure sine wave 120V, 60Hz output, adjustable from 100V to 120V.
- NEMA 5-15R or GFCI outlet versions.
- ECO mode: when the load drops below a set level (minimum 15W), the inverter goes to standby and checks for load every 2.5 seconds by default. That cuts its own draw to 1–2W.
- VE.Direct port for VictronConnect over a VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle, or for a Cerbo GX and VRM.
- Adjustable low-voltage cutoff (9.3V by default on 12V models) and restart (10.9V).
- Remote on/off terminal.
Who It’s For
- Vans and small campers running laptops, camera chargers, a Starlink Mini or a small fridge.
- Boats that need a little 120V power at anchor.
- Anyone who wants low idle draw. The 12/800 uses about 8W running idle, or 1–2W in ECO mode.
Limits to Know
- No charger and no transfer switch. For automatic shore-to-inverter switching, Victron suggests its Filax transfer switch (under 20ms), or a MultiPlus instead.
- No built-in Bluetooth on this range. You need the VE.Direct Smart dongle.
- Peak power is short. The 250W and 375W models handle a surge for only 2 seconds, so motors and compressors may trip them.
Verdict
For small loads, the Phoenix VE.Direct is one of the most efficient inverters you can buy. Pick a size with headroom, and check the 40°C rating if it’ll live in a hot compartment.
You can download the Phoenix Inverter VE.Direct manual and datasheet from Victron Energy’s website.
Worked Example: Picking a Size for a Van Desk Setup
Typical AC loads for a remote-work van, run at the same time:
| Load | Watts (est.) |
|---|---|
| Laptop charger | 65W |
| Monitor | 30W |
| Starlink Standard router and dish | 90W |
| Camera battery charger | 20W |
| Total | ≈ 205W |
Estimates based on common device ratings. The 12/250 could technically run this, but at 40°C it’s rated for only 200W. The 12/375 gives comfortable headroom in a warm van, and the 12/500 leaves room to add a small appliance later. Running the total continuously for 8 hours uses about 205 × 8 ÷ 0.88 ≈ 1,860Wh from the battery (estimate using the 12/375’s 88% peak efficiency at 24V; at 12V use 86%), so it suits a 200Ah lithium bank with solar.
Worked Example: A Small Fridge on the 12/800
A 120V compact fridge might run at about 80–100W with a start-up surge of several hundred watts for a moment. The 12/800’s 1,200W peak, held for up to 15 seconds, handles that kind of start comfortably, and its 650W rating at 40°C leaves room for other loads. Over a day, a fridge that runs 40% of the time at 90W uses about 860Wh, plus roughly 10–15% for inverter losses, so around 1,000Wh from the battery (estimates). Switching the inverter off when the fridge isn’t needed saves even more.
Battery and Cable Sizing
At 12V, input current is roughly output watts ÷ 12 ÷ efficiency. For the 12/800 at full power: 800 ÷ 12 ÷ 0.9 ≈ 74A (estimate). Size the DC cable and fuse for that current and keep the cable short, following the cable sizes in Victron’s manual. The smaller models draw much less: the 12/375 at full load is about 36A.
| Model | Approx. 12V input at full continuous power (est.) |
|---|---|
| 12/250 | ≈ 25A |
| 12/375 | ≈ 36A |
| 12/500 | ≈ 45A |
| 12/800 | ≈ 74A |
Estimates: continuous watts at 25°C ÷ 12V ÷ peak efficiency.
Setting Up ECO Mode in VictronConnect
- Connect through a VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle or VE.Direct to USB cable.
- Turn on ECO mode and set the power threshold just below your smallest AC load that should wake the inverter.
- Test by switching that load on and off and watching the inverter wake and sleep.
- If a small standby load keeps the inverter awake, raise the threshold or move that device to DC.
Monitoring With a GX Device
With a Cerbo GX, the Phoenix shows output power, battery voltage and state alongside your solar and battery data, and its history appears in VRM. You can also switch the inverter on and off remotely.
Phoenix VE.Direct vs Phoenix Smart vs MultiPlus-II
| Inverter | Power range | Built-in Bluetooth | Charger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phoenix VE.Direct | 250–800W (this guide) | No, dongle needed | No |
| Phoenix Smart | Larger sizes | Yes | No |
| MultiPlus-II | 3kVA and up | No, dongle or GX | Yes, with transfer switch |
For a few hundred watts of AC, the Phoenix VE.Direct keeps cost, weight and idle draw low. When you need higher power or built-in Bluetooth, the Phoenix Smart is the next step, and the MultiPlus-II adds charging and automatic shore switching.
Mounting Tips
Mount the inverter vertically or on a flat surface in a ventilated space, close to the battery so the DC cables stay short. Leave clearance around it for cooling, as described in the manual, especially for the 12/800 in a warm compartment where the 40°C rating applies.
FAQ
Can the Phoenix 12/800 run a fridge?
Often yes. Check the fridge’s start-up surge against the 1,200W, 15-second peak rating.
Is ECO mode good for a Starlink?
No. A constant load like that keeps the inverter fully on, so ECO mode won’t help.
Can I change the output voltage?
Yes. The output is adjustable from 100V to 120V in VictronConnect.
What’s the difference between the 5-15R and GFCI versions?
They differ in the outlet fitted. The GFCI version adds ground-fault protection at the outlet, which suits damp locations such as boats.
