Can a Victron Phoenix 1200 run a fridge? For most RV and household fridges, yes, as long as you check the compressor’s start-up surge and size the battery for 24-hour running. This guide uses the US Phoenix Inverter 12/1200 VE.Direct 120V, Victron’s 1200W model with a 120V outlet. The 1200VA Phoenix Compact models are 230V units for other markets.

Victron says these inverters use a full-bridge plus toroidal transformer design with high start-up power for difficult loads.
Can a Victron Phoenix 1200 Run a Fridge? The Surge Check
A compressor fridge pulls several times its running watts for a moment at start-up. Find the running watts or amps on your fridge’s label (amps × 120V = watts).
- Compact or 12V/120V RV fridge: typically well under 200W running. The 1600W peak covers the start easily.
- Full-size residential fridge: check the label. A 6A label is about 720W, and its start-up surge may approach the 1600W peak. Leave other loads off when the compressor kicks in.
These are rule-of-thumb figures. Your fridge’s label is the real limit.
Daily Energy Math (Estimate)
Example: a fridge that draws 150W while running and runs 40% of the time.
- Fridge: 150W × 24h × 0.4 = 1,440Wh per day
- Inverter idle (ECO off): 11W × 24h = 264Wh
- Total from the battery: about 1,700Wh ÷ 0.91 efficiency ≈ 1,870Wh per day
- At 12V, that’s about 156Ah per day, so a 200Ah lithium bank leaves little margin without solar.
This is an estimate. Measure your fridge with a plug-in meter, or use a SmartShunt on the DC side.
Should You Use ECO Mode?
ECO mode cuts idle draw to about 1W. Victron sets the minimum sense level at 15W, and the inverter checks for a load every 2.5 seconds. A fridge between compressor cycles may draw almost nothing, and some fridge controls don’t wake an ECO-mode inverter reliably. Test it. If the fridge fails to restart, turn ECO mode off.
Setup Tips
- Fuse and cable the inverter for its full rating (2 AWG maximum terminal size on the 12/1200).
- Turn on Dynamic cut-off in VictronConnect so a compressor surge doesn’t trip the low-voltage shutdown on a healthy battery.
- Keep the inverter cool. Its output falls to 1100W at 40°C.

Battery Sizing by Fridge Type
| Fridge (example) | Daily fridge energy (estimate) | With 12/1200 idle (ECO off) | 12V lithium bank for 1 day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact 120V fridge | About 500Wh | About 840Wh | About 100Ah |
| Mid-size apartment fridge | About 900Wh | About 1,280Wh | About 150Ah |
| Full-size residential fridge | About 1,400Wh | About 1,830Wh | About 200Ah |
Estimates; check your fridge’s yearly kWh label (divide by 365 for a daily figure) or measure it. The inverter’s 11W idle draw adds about 264Wh a day, which is significant for a small fridge.
Example: RV With a Residential Fridge
An RV with a residential fridge rated at about 1.3kWh a day (from its energy label), a Phoenix 12/1200 and 400W of solar. On a sunny day, the solar covers most of the fridge’s use (estimate), and a 300Ah battery covers the nights and cloudy days. When driving, an Orion XS DC-DC charger tops up the battery.
Solar to Keep the Fridge Running
| Daily energy from battery | Solar needed at 4 sun hours (estimate) |
|---|---|
| About 900Wh | About 300W |
| About 1,300Wh | About 400W |
| About 1,900Wh | About 600W |
Estimates, with a little margin for losses. A SmartSolar MPPT sized for the array, such as a 100/30 for 400W at 12V, handles the charging.
A 12V Compressor Fridge Instead?
If you’re building from scratch, a 12V compressor fridge runs straight from the battery with no inverter losses or idle draw. The Phoenix 12/1200 is the better pick when you already have a 120V fridge or want 120V for other appliances too.
Monitoring the Fridge’s Real Use
A SmartShunt on the battery negative shows the combined fridge and inverter draw over a day. Comparing a day with ECO mode on and off shows how much ECO saves with your particular fridge.
Remote On/Off and Cabling
The Phoenix 12/1200 has a remote on/off connector, so you can fit a switch somewhere handy, such as by the RV door. Use cable sized to the datasheet, keep the run short, and fuse it close to the battery.
Wiring Checklist
- Fuse the positive cable close to the battery, sized for the 12/1200’s full rating.
- Keep cable runs short and matched.
- Turn on Dynamic cut-off in VictronConnect.
- Set ECO mode only after testing it with your fridge.
- Watch the first 24 hours with a SmartShunt to confirm the daily energy figure.
FAQ
Is a 12/800 enough for a fridge?
For a small fridge, often yes (800W continuous, 1200W peak). For a residential fridge, choose the 12/1200 or larger.
Can it run the fridge and a microwave?
Not together. Most microwaves alone draw more than 1200W.
Does it need a transfer switch for shore power?
Victron recommends its Filax transfer switch, or a MultiPlus, which has one built in.
Will the Phoenix 12/1200 run a fridge in hot weather?
Yes, within its 1100W rating at 40°C. Fridges run longer in hot weather, so plan for higher daily energy use.
Can a 12/1200 run a chest freezer?
Usually, yes. Check the freezer’s label for running watts and start-up surge, as with a fridge.
