Victron vs Redarc is the DC-DC charger question for overlanders, especially in Australia where Redarc is the default. Both chargers top up a house battery from the alternator. The Redarc BCDC1250D adds a built-in solar input, while the Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A focuses on alternator charging with more adjustment. Here’s how they compare using only the official datasheet, product page and manual.

What the Specs Mean
- 24V vehicles. The BCDC1250D accepts 12V or 24V input to charge a 12V battery. The Orion XS 12/12 is 12V in and 12V out. Victron’s XS 1400 covers 9–35V.
- Solar. Redarc’s built-in MPPT uses “Green Power Priority”, meaning it charges from solar first. With Victron, you add a separate SmartSolar controller.
- Alternator protection. The Orion XS lets you dial the current down to protect a small alternator, and it has engine shutdown detection and an input-voltage lockout. Redarc’s Smart Start handles switching for standard and smart alternators.
- Monitoring. The Orion XS has Bluetooth, VE.Smart Networking and a VE.Direct port for a Cerbo GX. The BCDC1250D shows its status on seven LEDs.
- Battery size. Redarc recommends the BCDC1250D for banks over 200Ah and the BCDC1225D for 75–200Ah.
Which Should You Buy?
- Pick Victron if you already run Victron gear, want app control and DVCC, or need to limit the load on your alternator.
- Pick Redarc if you want one compact under-bonnet unit with solar input, or you have a 24V truck charging a 12V camper battery.
Victron lists every Orion XS variant, with datasheets, on its official product page.
Worked Example: Drive-Time Recharge
Both chargers are rated around 50A, so on a long drive they put back similar amounts:
| Drive | Orion XS at 50A (estimate) | BCDC1250D at 50A (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | ≈ 50Ah | ≈ 50Ah |
| 3 hours | ≈ 150Ah | ≈ 150Ah |
| 3 hours, Orion XS set to 30A | ≈ 90Ah | n/a |
Estimates before the absorption stage tapers current. The Orion’s adjustable current is the difference: on a vehicle with a small alternator, you can trade some charging speed for less alternator load.
Worked Example: Alternator Load
At 700W output and 98.5% efficiency, the Orion XS draws about 711W from the alternator, or roughly 52A at 13.8V (estimate). The Redarc doesn’t publish an efficiency figure, so you can’t make the same exact calculation; plan on a similar 50–60A draw at full output. If your alternator is rated at 120A or less and the vehicle also runs lights, fans and the air conditioning, dialling the Orion down to 30–40A leaves more headroom.
Worked Example: Adding Solar
Redarc route: connect up to the BCDC1250D’s solar limits directly to its input; it prioritises solar and tops up from the alternator as needed.
Victron route: add a SmartSolar 100/30 wired straight to the house battery. Its 440W nominal rating at 12V suits a typical 300–400W roof. Both the Orion XS and the SmartSolar can join a VE.Smart network with a SmartShunt so they charge using the same battery voltage and current.
Installation Steps (Either Brand)
- Pick a mounting spot: the Redarc is built for engine bay installs, while the Orion XS is IP65 and also suits engine bays or a rear storage area.
- Run cables from the starter battery to the charger and from the charger to the house battery, sized for 50A over the run length.
- Fit fuses near both batteries, sized per each maker’s manual.
- For smart alternators, wire the ignition signal if the manual calls for it.
- Select the battery profile: in VictronConnect for the Orion XS, or with the Redarc’s selector for the BCDC1250D.
Standby Draw When Parked
Victron lists the Orion XS’s standby current at under 1.5mA and Redarc lists under 8mA for the BCDC1250D. Over a month parked, that’s roughly 1.1Ah versus up to about 5.8Ah from the starter battery (estimates). Both are small, but for a vehicle stored for long periods, the lower figure helps keep the starter battery fuller.
Choosing by Vehicle
| Vehicle | Good fit |
|---|---|
| 12V dual-cab ute with a canopy and roof solar | Either; Redarc if you want solar built in |
| 24V truck with a 12V camper battery | Redarc BCDC1250D (12V or 24V input) |
| Van with Victron MultiPlus and SmartSolar | Orion XS |
| Small-alternator vehicle | Orion XS (adjustable current) |
Monitoring on the Road
With the Orion XS, VictronConnect shows input and output voltage, current and charge stage in real time, and a Cerbo GX can log it to VRM alongside your other gear. The Redarc’s LEDs show charge source and stage at a glance on the unit itself.
FAQ
Can I run Redarc with Victron solar?
Yes. Leave the Redarc solar input unused and add a SmartSolar controller to the battery. Set both chargers to the same battery profile.
Can I parallel Orion XS units?
Yes. Victron says an unlimited number of Orion XS units can be paralleled.
Is Redarc lithium compatible?
Yes. The BCDC1250D has a LiFePO4 profile with a 14.5V maximum.
Which is lighter?
The Orion XS weighs 0.33kg according to Victron; the BCDC1250D is about 1kg.
Do both work with smart alternators?
Yes. Both have modes for variable-voltage smart alternators; follow each manual’s wiring for the ignition signal.
Can I see the Redarc on a Victron GX device?
