The Victron Lead Carbon battery sits between AGM and lithium. It’s still a sealed lead-acid battery, but Victron replaces the negative plate’s active material with a lead carbon composite. Victron says this reduces sulfation and improves charge acceptance, which matters most in solar systems that rarely reach full charge. Here are the official specs and where it makes sense.

Both are sealed VRLA batteries.
Cycle Life
Victron’s design cycle life for the lead carbon battery:
- 500 cycles at 100% discharge
- 1,000 cycles at 60% discharge
- 1,400 cycles at 40% discharge
Compare that with Victron’s AGM Super Cycle at 300, 700 and 1,000 cycles. Lead carbon gives roughly 40-65% more cycles at each depth.
Why Lead Carbon Helps Solar Systems
Victron lists these advantages:
- Less sulfation during partial state-of-charge operation, which is when a battery spends days without a full recharge.
- Lower charge voltage, so higher efficiency and less corrosion of the positive plate.
- Better overall cycle life.
That fits off-grid cabins in winter, when the panels can’t fill the bank every day.
Who It’s For
- Off-grid solar systems that want lead-acid with better cycle life.
- Cold climates where lithium charging is a problem.
- Fixed installs where weight doesn’t matter.
Who Should Skip It
- Vans and boats where weight matters. The 160Ah weighs 55 kg.
- Daily deep cycling, where LiFePO4 lasts far longer.
Good to Know Before You Buy
- Very heavy and large.
- Lower usable capacity at high currents, with the 106Ah giving 92Ah at C5.
- Needs the right charger settings. Victron recommends 14.1-14.4V absorption, 13.5-13.8V float and 13.2-13.5V storage.

Worked Example: Usable Energy per Cycle
Usable energy depends on how deep you discharge, and that also decides cycle life.
| Battery | Depth of discharge | Usable per cycle (estimate) | Victron design cycles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12V 160Ah | 40% | ≈ 64Ah (≈ 770Wh) | 1,400 |
| 12V 160Ah | 60% | ≈ 96Ah (≈ 1,150Wh) | 1,000 |
| 12V 160Ah | 100% | ≈ 160Ah (≈ 1,920Wh) | 500 |
Estimates at the C20 rating; higher currents give less capacity.
Worked Example: Lifetime Energy
Multiply usable energy by cycles to see total energy over the battery’s life:
- 40% DoD: ≈ 770Wh × 1,400 ≈ 1,080kWh
- 60% DoD: ≈ 1,150Wh × 1,000 ≈ 1,150kWh
- 100% DoD: ≈ 1,920Wh × 500 ≈ 960kWh
Estimates. The sweet spot is around 50–60% depth of discharge, where you get both good daily capacity and good total lifetime energy.
Sizing a Bank for a Cabin
Say a cabin uses 1.2kWh a day and you want to stay around 50% depth of discharge, with two days of autonomy for cloudy weather:
- Energy for two days: 2.4kWh.
- At 50% depth of discharge: 4.8kWh of nominal capacity.
- On 24V: 4,800 ÷ 24 = 200Ah. Two strings of two 12V 106Ah batteries in series gives 24V 212Ah.
- On 12V: 4,800 ÷ 12 = 400Ah, or about three 160Ah batteries in parallel (480Ah).
Estimates; allow for temperature and inverter losses.
Charging Settings
| Setting | Victron recommendation (12V) |
|---|---|
| Absorption | 14.1–14.4V |
| Float | 13.5–13.8V |
| Storage | 13.2–13.5V |
Set these on your SmartSolar, Blue Smart charger or MultiPlus in VictronConnect using a user-defined profile. A battery monitor such as a SmartShunt helps you stay within your chosen depth of discharge.
Worked Example: Partial State of Charge in Winter
In winter, a cabin’s panels may only bring the bank back to about 80–90% each day. Standard lead-acid batteries left in that partial state build up sulfation, which slowly reduces capacity. Victron’s lead carbon design is aimed at this situation. Even so, it helps to give the bank a full charge whenever possible, for example from a generator once every week or two, or on the first sunny day after a cloudy spell. General guidance; follow the manual for equalisation and full-charge advice.
Lead Carbon vs Lithium at a Glance
Victron’s Lithium NG and Smart batteries offer far more cycles and much lower weight. Lead carbon wins on simplicity: no BMS is required, it can be charged in the cold, and it works with any lead-acid charger profile.
Installation Tips
- Use the M8 terminal inserts with the correct torque from the datasheet.
- Wire parallel batteries with equal-length cables, taking the positive from one end of the bank and the negative from the other, so they share current evenly.
- Keep series strings to identical batteries of the same age.
- Mount them upright on a solid base; at 36–55kg each, they need a strong floor or rack.
Lead Carbon in Cold Weather
Lead-acid chemistry can be charged in cold conditions where lithium needs heating, which suits unheated cabins. Capacity does drop in the cold, so size the bank with some extra margin for winter.
FAQ
How long does a Victron Lead Carbon battery last?
Victron rates it for 500 cycles at 100% discharge, 1,000 at 60% and 1,400 at 40%.
Is lead carbon better than AGM?
For cycle life and partial state of charge, Victron’s numbers favor lead carbon over its AGM Super Cycle range.
Is it maintenance-free?
It’s a sealed VRLA battery, so there’s no topping up with water.
Can I mix lead carbon with AGM batteries?
It’s best not to. Different chemistries and ages charge differently, so keep each bank to one type.
What charger works best?
Any charger with adjustable voltages, such as Victron’s Blue Smart chargers, SmartSolar MPPTs and MultiPlus inverter/chargers, set to the voltages above.
Does it need venting?
It’s a sealed VRLA battery, so normal use needs no topping up. Follow the manual’s ventilation guidance for the battery space.
