Lithium gets most of the attention, but Victron still sells sealed lead-acid batteries: AGM Deep Cycle, GEL Deep Cycle and the Victron AGM Super Cycle. They cost less up front, they’re happy in the cold, and they work with any charger that has a lead-acid profile. Here’s what Victron’s datasheets say about the Super Cycle range in particular, and where lead-acid still fits.
Victron AGM Super Cycle: Specs

All Super Cycle batteries are 12V sealed VRLA batteries with flat-plate AGM construction.
Cycle Life: The Number That Matters
Victron’s spec table gives the Super Cycle’s design life by depth of discharge:
- 300 cycles at 100% discharge
- 700 cycles at 60% discharge
- 1,000 cycles at 40% discharge
Victron says the improved chemistry resists sulfation and plate softening even after repeated full discharges, and that tests show at least 300 full cycles. That’s the selling point over standard AGM: an accidental flat battery isn’t a disaster.
AGM vs GEL vs Super Cycle
- AGM Super Cycle: for frequent deep discharges, as above.
- AGM Deep Cycle: Victron’s standard sealed AGM. It’s sized to sit in float or see shallower cycling.
- GEL Deep Cycle: gel electrolyte. Victron’s GEL and AGM datasheet covers both ranges, with full specs.
For any of them, set your charger to the right profile. The MultiPlus-II’s default battery type is Victron Gel Deep Discharge, which Victron says also suits its AGM Deep Discharge batteries.
Who It’s For
- Budget systems where upfront cost matters more than weight.
- Cold sites where lithium would need heating to charge.
- Standby and backup systems that mostly sit at float.
Who Should Go Lithium
- Daily-cycled vans and RVs, where 300-1,000 cycles get used up fast.
- Weight-sensitive builds: 100Ah of Super Cycle weighs 26 kg.
Good to Know Before You Buy
- Heavy.
- Fewer cycles than LiFePO4.
- Usable capacity drops at high discharge rates. The 100Ah gives 82Ah at the C5 rate.

Worked Example: A Weekend Trailer on AGM Super Cycle
A small trailer used for 20 weekends a year, with daily use of about 40Ah from a single 125Ah Super Cycle battery. That’s about 32% depth of discharge, below the 40% level where Victron’s design life is 1,000 cycles. At roughly 40 cycles a year (20 weekends × 2 days), the cycle rating alone would last many years (estimate; calendar ageing and temperature also matter). For this kind of light, occasional use, the lower upfront cost of AGM makes sense.
Worked Example: Comparing Usable Energy
| Battery | Nominal energy | Typical usable (est.) | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| AGM Super Cycle 100Ah | 1,200Wh | ≈ 600Wh at 50% DoD | 26kg |
| AGM Super Cycle 230Ah | 2,760Wh | ≈ 1,380Wh at 50% DoD | 57kg |
| Lithium Battery Smart 12.8/100 | 1,280Wh | ≈ 1,024Wh at 80% DoD | Lighter, see datasheet |
Estimates; usable capacity depends on discharge rate and how deeply you choose to cycle. For the same usable energy, lead-acid needs roughly twice the rated capacity of lithium, which is where the weight difference comes from.
Charging Settings for Victron AGM and GEL
Victron’s chargers include presets for its lead-acid batteries. The MultiPlus-II’s default profile, Victron Gel Deep Discharge, uses 14.4V absorption, 13.8V float and 13.2V storage on 12V, and Victron says it also suits AGM Deep Discharge batteries. For the Super Cycle, check its datasheet for the recommended absorption and float values and set a matching profile in VictronConnect.
Temperature Compensation
Lead-acid batteries need lower charge voltages when warm and higher when cold. Pairing a Victron charger with a Smart Battery Sense, SmartShunt with temperature sensor or BMV-712 provides the battery’s real temperature, so the charger adjusts automatically. That’s one of the simplest ways to get the most life from AGM and GEL batteries.
Where Lead-Acid Still Shines
- Cold storage and winter sites: lead-acid charges below freezing, within its datasheet limits.
- Standby backup: batteries that sit at float most of the time, such as for sump pumps or communication equipment.
- Starter and dual-purpose roles: larger Super Cycle sizes list cold cranking amps.
- Simple systems: any charger with a lead-acid profile works.
Installation Notes
Sealed VRLA batteries can be mounted upright or on their side, depending on the datasheet, and don’t need topping up with water. Secure them firmly, since a 100Ah unit weighs 26kg, and fuse the positive cable close to the battery.
Choosing a Size
Add up your daily amp-hours and multiply by two for lead-acid, so you stay near 50% depth of discharge on a typical day. For 50Ah a day, that points to a 100Ah battery; for 100Ah a day, two 100Ah in parallel or a single 230Ah. Allow more if you want a reserve for cloudy days.
FAQ
How many cycles does the Victron AGM Super Cycle last?
300 cycles at 100% discharge, 700 at 60% and 1,000 at 40%, according to Victron.
Is the Super Cycle sealed?
Yes. It’s a sealed VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid) battery.
Can I use it as a starter battery?
Victron lists cold cranking amps for the larger sizes, such as 500A for the 100Ah, but it’s designed as a deep-cycle battery.
Can I mix a new AGM with an older one?
Batteries in a bank should be the same type, capacity and age, so replacing the whole bank together is the usual approach.
Do AGM batteries need a special charger?
Any charger with an AGM or GEL profile works. Victron’s Blue Smart, Smart IP43 and MultiPlus chargers all include suitable presets.
