The Victron SmartSolar MPPT RS 450 is Victron’s high-voltage 48V solar charge controller. It accepts up to 450V of PV input and comes in two sizes, the 450/100 and the 450/200. It suits large off-grid homes and cabins where long panel strings keep cable losses down. Here’s what it offers, from Victron’s MPPT RS datasheet.

Features
- Galvanic isolation between PV and battery connections.
- PV isolation monitoring: it checks the array’s insulation resistance and reports an error below 100kΩ, while continuing to charge.
- VE.Can and VE.Direct for a GX device, VRM and remote firmware updates, plus up to 25 synced units over VE.Can.
- Bluetooth and display, with a 30-day history per tracker in VictronConnect.
- I/O: programmable relay (alarm, low voltage or genset start/stop), temperature sensor (included), two analog/digital inputs and a remote input that accepts a smallBMS.
- Fan-assisted cooling, rated -40 to +60°C, IP21.
The Voltage Rule to Know
Victron notes that the PV Voc should not exceed 8 × battery float voltage. With a 52.8V float, that’s 422.4V, below the 450V headline. Check both limits at your coldest temperature.
Who It’s For
- 48V homes and cabins with 6kW to 11kW+ of panels.
- Ground mounts far from the battery, where high-voltage strings cut cable size.
- Systems that need several roof orientations on separate trackers.
Monitoring
On a GX device with internet, or a GlobalLink 520, the MPPT RS logs to Victron’s free VRM portal, with email alarms.
Good to Know Before You Buy
- 48V only, no 12V or 24V.
- Not compatible with VE.Smart Networks, according to the datasheet.
- IP21: indoor, dry installation only.
- Higher voltage DC needs proper PV disconnects and an experienced installer.
Victron lists every SmartSolar MPPT RS variant, with datasheets, on its official product page.
Worked Example: Strings for a 450/100
Using illustrative 410W panels with about 37V Voc and a −0.27%/°C Voc coefficient:
- Coldest morning −15°C, 40°C below test conditions: Voc rises about 10.8%, to roughly 41V per panel.
- Limit from Victron’s rule: 8 × 52.8V float = 422.4V. Divide by 41V: up to 10 panels per string.
- Ten panels give about 410V cold Voc, under both 422.4V and 450V.
- Two trackers, one string of 10 panels each = 20 panels, about 8.2kW.
- Each tracker accepts up to 4,000W of DC charging power, so each 4.1kW string is very slightly clipped at peak; the total is capped at 5,760W by the 100A charge current.
Worked estimates; use your panel’s datasheet and Victron’s MPPT calculator. For the 450/100, about 5.8kW of panels is the efficient range, and oversizing simply clips the peak hours.
Worked Example: The 450/200 on Four Roof Faces
A house with east, west, south and garage roofs can put one string on each of the 450/200’s four trackers. Each tracks its own maximum power point, so the east roof producing in the morning doesn’t drag down the west roof. Up to 11.5kW of charge power is available in total.
Worked Example: Cable Savings
At 400V and 10A, a string carries about 4kW. The same 4kW on a 100V string would carry about 40A, needing much heavier cable for the same voltage drop. That’s why a long run from a ground mount 50m away is practical on the RS 450 with standard 6mm² PV cable (illustration; size from local code).
Installation Steps
- Mount the controller vertically indoors, in a dry spot with clearance for its fan (IP21).
- Fit a DC isolator rated for the string voltage on each tracker’s input.
- Connect the 48V battery through a fuse or breaker sized for 100A or 200A.
- Connect the temperature sensor to the battery terminal.
- Connect VE.Can to a GX device, or use Bluetooth and VictronConnect for setup.
- Set the battery profile, then connect the PV strings and check each tracker’s voltage and power.
Isolation Monitoring in Practice
Because the PV input is galvanically isolated, the controller can check the array’s insulation resistance. If moisture gets into a connector or a cable jacket is damaged, the reading falls and the controller reports an error below 100kΩ while continuing to charge. That gives you an early prompt to inspect the array, which is especially useful on large ground mounts that aren’t checked often.
Using the Programmable Relay
The relay can be set as an alarm, a low-voltage disconnect signal, or a generator start/stop. For a cabin with a backup generator, the relay can start it when battery voltage drops in a cloudy spell, independent of a GX device.
Pairing With Inverters
In a 48V off-grid home, the RS 450 typically charges the same battery as a pair of MultiPlus-II 48/5000 or Quattro units. On a GX device with DVCC, the charge controller and the inverter/chargers follow one set of limits from a compatible lithium BMS.
