The Victron MultiPlus classic is the original MultiPlus inverter/charger, sold for years before the MultiPlus-II. The 800VA to 2,000VA “Compact” models are popular in small boats and vans, and the 3kVA rounds out the range. Here’s what Victron’s MultiPlus 800VA–5kVA datasheet says about the 800VA to 3kVA models, and how they compare with the MultiPlus-II.

Features
- No-break AC transfer in under 20 milliseconds, so computers keep running.
- PowerControl and PowerAssist on every model, to protect and boost a small generator or shore supply.
- A 4A starter-battery charge output on 12V and 24V models.
- A second AC output on 3kVA and larger models, live only when AC input is present.
- Parallel and three-phase: up to 6 units in parallel.
- VE.Bus port for a GX device, the Digital Multi Control or a VE.Bus Smart dongle.
The 230V Warning
The datasheet lists 230V, 50Hz output, adjustable to 60Hz, with “120V models available on request.” For most US buyers, the MultiPlus-II 120V is the easier choice.
MultiPlus Classic vs MultiPlus-II
At 3kVA (12V), Victron’s datasheets put the classic at 20W zero-load power (8W in Search mode) and a 6,000W peak. The MultiPlus-II 12/3000/120 is rated 13W (3W in Search mode) with a 5,500W peak, and it comes as a native 120V model. The Compact models still fill the small 800–2,000VA gap, which is useful in small vans and boats.
Who It’s For
- Small 230V boats and vans that need 700–1,600W of AC and a strong charger.
- Replacing an existing classic MultiPlus with the same footprint.
- Simple 12V systems with modest AC loads.
Good to Know Before You Buy
- 230V by default.
- Higher idle draw at 3kVA than newer units.
- IP20 aluminum case, for dry spaces only.

Worked Example: A Small Sailboat on a 10A Pedestal
A 32-foot sailboat with a 12V 200Ah lithium bank, a MultiPlus Compact 12/1600/70 and a 230V supply from a 10A marina pedestal:
- Set the AC input current limit to 10A in VictronConnect or VEConfigure.
- With PowerControl, the charger reduces its output when onboard 230V loads rise, so the pedestal breaker stays on.
- With PowerAssist, a 1,800W kettle on a 10A (2,300W) pedestal can run while other loads are on, as the inverter supplies the shortfall from the battery for a short time (estimate).
- Charging the bank from 20% to near full at 70A takes roughly 2.5 hours, ignoring the slower final stage (estimate: 160Ah ÷ 70A ≈ 2.3h).
Worked Example: A Van With the 800VA Compact
A small van with a 12V 100Ah battery and a C 12/800/35:
- 700W continuous covers a laptop, a small blender and a 230V phone charger.
- The 35A charger fills a 100Ah lithium battery from 30% in about two hours on a campsite hook-up (estimate).
- The 4A starter-battery output keeps the vehicle battery topped up while the van sits on hook-up for days.
- Search mode cuts idle draw to about 2W when nothing is running.
Worked Example: Keeping the Starter Battery Charged
The 4A starter-battery output on 12V and 24V models is a gentle trickle charge. Over a week on shore power, it can replace what an alarm system and a few small vehicle loads draw (estimate). It’s not designed to recharge a flat starter battery quickly, but it stops one from slowly running down.
Configuring a Classic MultiPlus
Classic MultiPlus units are set up over VE.Bus. Use one of these:
- An MK3-USB interface with VEConfigure on a computer, for full settings, assistants and parallel or three-phase setup.
- A VE.Bus Smart dongle for Bluetooth monitoring and basic settings in VictronConnect.
- A GX device for monitoring, remote settings and VRM.
- A Digital Multi Control panel for on/off and input current limit at the helm or door.
Choosing a Model
| Typical AC load | Good fit |
|---|---|
| — | — |
| Laptop, phone, small appliances | C 12/800/35 |
| Coffee machine or microwave, one at a time | C 12/1200/50 or C 12/1600/70 |
| Small galley with several 230V loads | C 12/2000/80 |
| Larger boat or van with heavy loads and a big bank | 12/3000/120 |
Installation Notes
- Mount it vertically on a solid surface with space around it for airflow, in a dry location.
- Size the DC cables and fuse from the manual table for your model and run length.
- Fit the battery temperature sensor if you have lead-acid batteries.
- Have AC wiring, earthing and shore connection done by a qualified electrician to local rules.
Search Mode on the Compact Models
Search mode cuts the Compact models’ idle draw from 8W to about 2W on 12V. Over a day at anchor, that’s the difference between roughly 190Wh and 50Wh, or about 15Ah versus 4Ah from a 12V bank (estimate). Set the search thresholds so small loads like a phone charger still wake the inverter, or switch search mode off while those are in use.
Pairing With Other Victron Parts
- A SmartShunt or BMV for accurate battery state of charge.
- A SmartSolar MPPT for solar charging alongside the shore charger.
- A Cerbo GX for VRM, remote settings and DVCC with a managed lithium battery.
FAQ
Is the Victron MultiPlus classic discontinued?
Victron still lists it on its website, alongside the MultiPlus-II.
Can the Compact models run in parallel?
Yes. The datasheet says up to 6 MultiPlus units can run in parallel.
Can I replace a classic MultiPlus with a MultiPlus-II?
Yes, in most cases, but footprints, cable entries and settings differ. Check the MultiPlus-II dimensions and reprogram settings for your battery and supply.
Does the classic MultiPlus support lithium batteries?
Yes. Charge voltages are adjustable, and it works with Victron’s VE.Bus BMS and GX-connected batteries.
What does the second AC output on the 3kVA do?
It’s live only when AC input is present, so it suits loads like a water heater that shouldn’t run from the battery.
Can a classic MultiPlus run in three-phase?
Yes. The datasheet lists parallel and three-phase operation, configured over VE.Bus.
